Tanbaly – in the Focus of UNESCO

An important meeting was held at the UNESCO Office in Almaty, dedicated to the issues of preserving and developing rock art in Kazakhstan. Special attention was given to the State Historical, Cultural and Natural Museum-Reserve “Tanbaly” – the only rock art site in our country inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Key topics:
• The current state of Tanbaly and the need to improve conservation measures;
• Development of tourist infrastructure to ensure the sustainable operation of the site;
• The importance of elaborating a new national strategy.
Proposals:
• Organizing a National Congress on Petroglyphs at Tanbaly as a common platform for the study and protection of rock art;
• Introducing international best practices;
• Exploring UNESCO’s emergency funding mechanisms to support a short-term management plan addressing urgent conservation and infrastructure needs.
The meeting was fruitful. As a result, agreements were reached on the implementation of new joint projects and initiatives aimed at safeguarding cultural heritage.
